Mason Health Care Resident Celebrates 100TH Birthday

"Always be good natured"- that's the advice from Edith Bastin, who turned one hundred on Tuesday, September 22 at Mason Health Care Center. Mother of five children, grandmother to seventy-eight grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren, Edith was born in Walton, Kentucky, but her family soon moved to Cincinnati for the job opportunities. After she married, Edith and her husband lived and worked in various Cincinnati neighborhoods, where they raised their five children: Blue Ash, Anderson, Norwood, Pleasant Ridge.

Edith and her two sisters were part of baseball history on May 24, 1935, when they attended a Cincinnati Reds game at Crosley field, the first stadium to have lights installed for night games following the Great Depression. The May 24 game was the first night game with lights, the Reds beat the Phillies, 2-1!

In 1954, Edith and her husband started their own church, First Church of God, in the Anderson area, where Edith played the piano. After Edith's husband passed away in 1982, she moved in with her daughter, Marilyn, in Mason where she lived for twenty-two years. In 2008, Edith became a resident at the Mason Health Care Center.

On Tuesday, Edith celebrated her birthday, along with Mason HCC staff and residents, and family members. Staff also presented Edith with congratulatory plaques from President Barack Obama and the Mayor of Mason, Tom Grossmann.

Edith's other advice for the secret to a long life-"If you have a temper, be sure to control it. Hold down your job well."
